What are the requirements to qualify for a dental implants procedure?

At Mona Lisa Smile Dental, we place dental implants in patients for a variety of reasons. One of the key, qualifying factors is health. If you have any other oral health problems, these will need to be addressed first. Since this is a surgical procedure, it is important to start the process with healthy teeth and gums. The other qualify factor is bone density. We will take x-rays in our San Ramon, CA dental office to determine if your bone is dense enough for the implant to be securely placed. If it is not, we can discuss other options such as bone grafts.

Dental implants have been used for several decades. Patients of all ages have chosen dental implants to replace a single tooth or several teeth or to support partial or full dentures. It’s no surprise implants and their crowns help restore the ability to chew food. They help fill out a face that otherwise could look sunken because of missing teeth.

Unlike dentures, implants and crowns are not removed for overnight soaking and cleaning. No adhesives are needed. Implant-supported teeth look and function just like real teeth, and are maintained with the same oral hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing.

In order to provide successful and aesthetic dental implant treatment, certain clinical parameters must be met. This is particularly true in the anterior maxilla, where the teeth and their supporting structures are readily visible. You must have enough bone in your jaw to allow an implant to be placed in the jawbone. You should be free of periodontal disease. Implants are not recommended for:

  • Smokers
  • People who have autoimmune diseases or take medicines used for these conditions
  • People who have had radiation therapy to the head and neck
  • People with uncontrolled diabetes

Dr. Khandaqji will examine you and determine if you are suitable to get implants.

Before Placing Dental Implants
Who is a good candidate for implant treatment?  You are, if you’re in good health and have healthy gums and adequate bone to support an implant. You must be committed to thorough oral hygiene to keep your mouth healthy and to scheduling regular dental visits. Those who have lost all of their teeth or are soon to have their last, failing teeth removed have several options for tooth replacement. One of the most advanced, reliable techniques is to permanently attach lifelike prosthetic (new replacement) teeth to dental implants that are anchored in the jawbone.

What are the final results like with a dental implant compared to a bridge or dentures?

Dental implants as a permanent solution to tooth loss that can restore both the appearance and function of our patients’ smilesBe sure to ask about the final results and what you can expect for your particular situation. Scientifically, an implant is the most secure and durable tooth replacement solution that you can find because it derives strength from the jawbone. By comparison, a bridge relies on your other teeth to hold the bridge in place and dentures are removable which means that they can come loose.
