Endodontist Dr. Mohammad Khandaqji, DDS uses state of the art root canal therapyEndodontist Dr. Mohammad Khandaqji, DDS uses state of the art root canal therapy meant to free you of pain, discomfort and remove the risk of tooth loss in San Ramon. Much depends upon the condition of the tooth, the degree and duration of involvement, and the individual’s own body reactions. We have the means to control any discomfort.

Here at Mona Lisa Smile Dental, we make every effort to provide for your comfort and well-being. While treatment is relatively painless, at times tenderness or even swelling can occur between visits. Although these reactions tend to prolong treatment, they do not necessarily alter the chances for success, nor do they occur routinely. A tooth will not be treated unless there is a very good chance for success. While there is no certainty concerning healing, we expect proper healing to occur in approximately 87% of cases. With proper root canal therapy and endodontics as well as subsequent restoration to function, such teeth can be expected to remain useful and functional for a very long time. Our proven rate of success is so consistently high that no patient need feel he or she is taking an unnecessary risk in attempting to save a diseased tooth.

What does root canal therapy involve?

With proper root canal therapy and endodontics your teeth can be expected to remain useful and functional for a very lonYour procedure requires one or more appointments and can be performed in our San Ramon dental office by Dr. Khandaqji, DDS. While the tooth is numb, a rubber dam (a sheet of rubber) will be placed around the tooth to keep it dry and free of saliva. An access opening is made on top of the tooth and a series of root canal files are placed into the opening, one at a time, removing the pulp, nerve tissue, and bacteria. If tooth decay is present, it will also be removed with special dental instruments. Once the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, it will be sealed with either a permanent filling or, if additional appointments are needed, a temporary filling will be placed.

At the next appointment, usually a week later, the roots and the inside cavity of the tooth will be filled and sealed with special dental materials. A filling will be placed to cover the opening on top of the tooth. In addition, all teeth that have treatment should have a crown (cap) placed. This will protect the tooth and prevent it from breaking, and restore it to its full function. After treatment, your tooth may still be sensitive, but this will subside as the inflammation diminishes and the tooth has healed. You will be given care instructions after each appointment. Good oral hygiene practices and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your root canal treatment.
